Welcome to MapServer¶
MapServer is an Open Source platform for publishing spatial data and interactive mapping applications to the web. Originally developed in the mid-1990’s at the University of Minnesota, MapServer is released under an MIT-style license, and runs on all major platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X). MapServer is not a full-featured GIS system, nor does it aspire to be. See the Site Gallery for live examples of MapServer in action.
The MapServer Project Steering Committee (PSC), sanctioned by OSGeo, manages and administers the project which is maintained, improved, and supported by developers and users from around the world. See the community activities page for mailing lists, etc.

2025-09-19 - MapServer 8.4.1 is released

Security release available
The maintenance release of MapServer 8.4.1 has been issued in order to fix a security flaw for WFS filters through OGR. See the changelog for the list of changes. You may also review MapServer’s Security Policy, the CVE record: CVE-2025-59431, as well as this Security Advisory. As security for the 7.6 branch has ended, and branches 8.2 & 8.0 are not supported, all users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the MapServer 8.4.1 release (see the Migration Guide).
